Chapter 28

Agent Samantha DeVreau sat behind her mahogany desk, reading a file on her latest charge, Benita Renee Jenkins. She studied the photo of the attractive young woman and closed the folder, tapping her perfectly manicured red fingernails on the desk, thinking about the right approach to take with this girl.

Benita was hostile toward the agents and the team. She was a challenge, but no one could blame her. She’d been pulled out of her normal life and thrown to the wolves. She had been treated more like a pawn than a person. It was Samantha’s job to make her feel human again.

She walked over to the window. A small bird bounced around the sill. She placed her long fingers outside. “Hey, there. I have my own little ‘birdie’ to deal with. How am I going to get her to see her full potential?”

Samantha had been working for DTCU for the past ten years as a criminal psychologist. She was responsible for training the worst of the worst and turning them into loyal fighting machines for DTCU. Before DTCU, she had served on an international task force geared toward turning terrorists into allies for the United States. She was one of the top experts in her field and specialized in post-traumatic stress disorder cases, where she worked specifically with ex-military who were suffering from the disorder.

One Saturday night, while attending a fundraiser for one of DC’s most prominent politicians, she was introduced to military man Jeremiah Nathan Bolden. He was handsome, and Samantha approached him like a sleek black cat checking out her potential prey. They spent the entire night talking about current events and the state of affairs. She invited him back to her apartment for a nightcap. The connection was strong, and they couldn’t deny it.

She’d found herself being pulled toward this handsome stranger, and whatever Samantha wanted, she got. Her confidence was overwhelming for the average person, but she had met her match with Jeremiah. They had a passionate affair while he was married. He was private and kept a lot of secrets from her, especially his involvement in the Delta Forces.

When she asked him if he was in Delta Force, he would neither confirm nor deny. These soldiers worked for whoever needed them—the Army, the FBI, or the CIA. They were professional soldiers following their own rules and doing whatever was needed to complete their missions.

As much as Samantha respected Jeremiah’s commitment to the military, she was never really able to feel the love he claimed he felt for her. He had many demons buried deep inside him, and Samantha knew all too well from her patients that once a person locked away painful experiences, he could never fully recover. Many times, when she and Jeremiah were together, she didn’t feel he was totally there with her. Even when she tried to talk to him about it, he would shut her off or bark at her to stop analyzing him. He was who he was, and if she didn’t like it, she could end it.
